Manusmriti of which it is translated to "code of Manu", actually signifies "reflections on Manu". It is a text that defines the code of conduct for human societies.

It was first discovered about 1 800 years ago. It was at this time that Yagna-based Vedic Hinduism morphed into temple-based Puranic Hinduism.

Many believe Mansumriti as the lawbook for Hindus. It's like the Sharia to Muslims or the Church Dogma, for Catholic Christians or even it's the Constitution of India. It's not.

Manusmriti or code of conduct, was written by brahmins. It is intended primarilyfor brahmins, but may also be useful for other "upper" caste groups, such as the King. It is among the dharmashastras, a group of texts.

Unlike Vedas, which are called shruti, that which is heard, and considered timeless divine revelations, Manusmriti or Manava-dharma-shastra, is a smriti (that which is recollected): the work of man, subject to change with time (kala), place (sthan) and participants (patra).

Hindus consider that our lives are more meaningful when we are pursuing four goals at the same time (purusha-artha). They must be socially responsible (dharma) develop and share wealth (artha) as well as enjoy pleasure (kama), and to not be entangled with any item (moksha).

Shastra is the word used to describe knowledge that pertains to each of these pursuits when it's well-organized. We have artha, dharma, moksha, kama and moksha-shastra.

These shastras were compiled by brahmins during the time in the Mauryan Emperors. They were originally made up of prose. To make it easier to remember, sentences were brief and terse. They were called sutras. Later poetry (shloka) replaced prose.

Baudhayana, Gautama and Apasthambha created the first Dharma-shastras. Chanakya wrote the artha-shastras. Vatsyayana compiled kama-shastra. Various philosophers, including Patanjali, Badarayana, compiled various types of moksha-shastras, such as yoga or vedanta.

The term "compiled" is important because these scholars acknowledged that they were part of an older and larger tradition and that their information came from outside sources like the Vedas.

Manusmriti was written around 200 CE (Common Era). This is due to the fact that Saka (North West tribes) as well as Cheen (China) who made contact with India in the early years were believed to have written it.

It also refers back to gold coins which were used for the first time during this time in accordance with archaeological evidence. It's included in the texts written during this period, like the Kamasutra.

Manusmriti stands out among Dharma-shastras as it is a unique text. It is holy texts.

Manusmriti's source is believed to be Brahma who was the creator. It was first passed on to Manu who passed it on first to Bhrigu and, in turn, passed it on on to teachers. Manusmriti, since its creation was thought to be the most significant dharma-shastra, and was considered to be superior to any other legal texts.

Manusmriti is the name of the code book utilized by the majority of commentary on the dharmashastras. It is traced back to the Vedas and also to the practices, customs and beliefs of those who have read the Vedas.

Manusmritiis in accordance with the Vedic belief that society is comprised of four types of people. They are those who have a knowledge of the Vedas as well as those who manage the land (kshatriyas) trading (vaishyas), and the ones who are serving (shudra). In general, dharma-shastras assign greater significance to the code for brahmins, than to the code for kshatriyas. Artha-shastra explains statecraft. Manusmriti offers the code for brahmins almost identical to the code for kshatriyas. This makes artha-shastra an effective part of dharma-shastra. In the past, dharmashastras were primarily concerned with the regulation of the behavior of brahmins Mansmriti is also interested in managing the conduct of Kshatriyas.
